Moseley Craft Beer Festival Returns! 3

Last year saw the first Moseley Craft Beer Festival at the Dark Horse. It was a great event taking over the bar and outside area and showcasing both local breweries and those from further afield. We were lucky enough, as a team, to visit and whilst there we met Edward Harrison (one of the organisers) and helped him out by answering some questionnaires for his dissertation. Early this year he contacted me again (to say he’d passed) and ask me if I’d like to talk to him about this year’s festival. Never one to turn down the chance to talk about beer we met at Tilt and he gave me some early insights into what to expect at the festival this year.

He started off by saying they’d taken some learning from last year and based on those the format would change slightly. Firstly the festival will run all weekend and instead of the outside area it will now take over all 3 floors of the bar including the restaurant area along with the front garden. This will give them a lot more space and also mean more of the bars will be inside just in case our glorious summer doesn’t continue into August!

The mezzanine area is going to be used for talks, tastings and the judging of the homebrew competition (running now and closing on 17th August). There are a lot more details to come on this but from what I hear it’s going to be an interesting selection so keep your eyes peeled online.

As with the festival last year entry will be free but there will be a deposit on the glasses which you can then keep as a souvenir or trade in when you leave for your money back. The plan is to have 50 taps over the 3 floors and already confirmed to pour are:

  • Dig Brew Co,
  • Glasshouse Brewing Co,
  • Burning Soul,
  • Loka Polly,
  • Siren
  • Odyssey
  • and Magic Rock.

The full list should be available mid-August so keep checking the website and social media for details.

In addition to these beers the organisers are brewing a number of collabs or getting exclusive beers from these local brewers:(details of some of these are already on their Twitter).

  • Burning Soul,
  • Birmingham Brewing Co,
  • Glasshouse Brewing Co,
  • DE14
  • Purity

Entertainment is a big part of the ethos of the Dark Horse and this year there will be live music across all of the sessions as well as after parties for attendees to enjoy.

With the opening of Ben’s Bao Bar next door it makes sense that these guys will do the food, I’m sure there’ll be some festival specials! As well as that the kitchen in the pub will be doing a special menu focussing on street food to help us all soak up the beers.

Based on our experiences last year this is a great festival, well run and with a good selection of beers. This year’s festival runs from 24-26 August so go along and support them and keep the burgeoning beer scene in Birmingham growing.

Hi, such a pity I read about the Moseley beer fest 10 days after it has happened! Why was the blog so late? I would love to have attended had I been aware of the dates, which to be honest I was from Birmingham beer week info, but now I see what beers were on I might have made an effort!
